Launch of AYUSH-ISHA Organic Health Systems Project

Namakkal, India, October 9, 2010 Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Shri S. Gandhi Selvan inaugurated AYUSH-ISHA Organic Health Systems project at the Government Higher Secondary School premises in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu in the presence of Sadhguru, Founder, Isha Foundation. The 12month pilot project aims to improve the health of the rural populace of Kolli Hills Block in Namakkal District through a holistic approach involving a unique combination of Ayurveda, Siddha, & Naturopathy, Yogic practices, essential allopathic treatments, and physical fitness programs.Smt. Muthaiah, Tamil Poet, Shri P. Krishnamoorthy, Former Director of Department of Public Health, Tamil Nadu, Shri J.M.Balamurugan I.A.S., Shri K.Sekar, Managing Trustee and Project Director, Isha Outreach also presided.

 

A grand confluence of approximately 10, 000 people attended the event that extolled the various

attributes and benefits of holistic AYUSH methods as a system of health care and wellbeing. Isha seized the occasion to conduct the project’s first mass awareness activity on the importance of preservation of various traditional herbs & medicines and their long term benefits.

 

In order to spread the awareness among the students, various competitions were conducted for students from different schools in and around Namakkal and Kolli Hills. Approximately 500 students from 5 schools took part in drawing and essay writing competitions, designed to ascertain and improve their level of awareness about various health related issues and practicing AYUSH towards health and wellbeing. Winners were awarded by the dignitaries with the blessings of Sadhguru.


 

The crowd cheered the launching of a kit with basic Siddha medications for minor ailments. 500 local health volunteers will receive training and kits to serve villages throughout Kolli Hills during the project. The Mobile Health Clinic, inaugurated by District Collector, Smt. S. Madhumathi, effectively combines 50 types of various AYUSH medicines with 20 types of basic allopathic treatments. During a tour, the staff doctor (Siddha) briefed dignitaries on the clinics multiple functions.

Various stalls promoted the benefits of AYUSH health systems, by displaying a range of herbs prevalent in Kolli Hills with descriptions of their benefits. Replica models showcased the village setting, the AYUSH-Isha Mobile Health Clinic, and the importance of preserving natural resources. More than 500 volunteers made the event a great success!
